As the owner of Bijou Skin Health Clinic, Kathy Johnson brings both passion and expertise to the table. She believes that beautiful, healthy skin is attainable for all, and her goal is to help her patients achieve their skin care goals. When she’s not busy resurfacing, regenerating, and rejuvenating at the clinic, she loves travelling, walking her two dobermans, and connecting with the world around her.
We sat down with Kathryn to learn more about her and Bijou. Continue reading below.
How did you get into skin care?
I’ve always been in love with skin care––even as a little girl! My mother sent me to aesthetic night school when I was only nine years old, and my passion for and knowledge of the field has been growing since then.
Why is skin care so important to you?
Many people don’t know this, but our skin is actually our largest organ, so we need to take great care of it. It’s important for us to understand what our skin is and what it does. It’s a reflection not only of our health, but also of our self-love.
Our skin tells us (and everyone else!) what’s going on in our bodies, good and bad. Skin concerns can be painful, both physically and emotionally, but most skin concerns are also totally fixable with the right help from professionals.
Where did you get all of your knowledge, training, and experience? How do you know what you know?
I studied at the Edith Soree aesthetic school in Toronto and the Obagi Skin Health Institute, and I have received laser training from John Hoopman as well as Viva training. I also make it a priority to keep up to date with the latest conferences and papers.
What sets Bijou apart from day spas?
When I opened Bijou, my goal was to provide a unique skin care experience for my patients. I wanted Bijou to be more than just a day spa, more than just nipping and tucking, and freezing and filling. I’ve noticed that sometimes there’s a tendency to focus on the less effective aspects of skin care that just cover up skin concerns temporarily.
A lot of people are missing out on the science behind healthy skin! At Bijou, our medical professionals go beyond surface ‘band-aid’ cures, and instead offer long-lasting results through skin science and skin health.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what Zo product would you have with you?
That’s such a tough question! I would absolutely need my Daily Power Defence since it has DNA repair properties that protect against sun and pollution, and DNA function is key in healthcare as well as skin care. That said, the Exfoliating Polish and Complexion Renewal Pads are definitely runner ups.
What are the benefits of mineral makeup?
Don’t underestimate the difference that using makeup with great (or not so great) ingredients can have on your skin. Certain ingredients, like talcum, can clog pores, harbour bacteria, and cause breakouts.
By investing in mineral makeup with pharmaceutical-grade ingredients that are anti-inflammatory/anti-bacterial, have broad spectrum UV protection, and defend against free radical damage, you can help ensure that your skin looks and is healthy.
Is it ever too late to start taking care of your skin?
Never. As we age, DNA stops functioning effectively, and that’s when disease starts, but there are products, devices, and treatments that can actually reverse DNA.
Is it ever too early to start taking care of your skin?
In some ways, yes. We start aging the moment we’re born––although baby skin, for example, isn’t developed until the age of six months––but after that point, everyone should start using a good, clean sunscreen on their skin, as well as gentle products to clean it.
What is your go-to face treatment?
I can’t pick one! The best face treatments are tailored to individual concerns, but one of my personal favourites is Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL) because it reverses DNA and keeps DNA functioning. I also love fractional resurfacing treatments, like microneedling, laser, and RF, which rejuvenate brand new baby cells and create a really pretty texture. Think of it as aerating your skin like you would aerate your lawn.
Other than great products, treatments, and makeup, what is one way to take care of your skin?
It’s essential to keep yourself in good health: eat right, get good sleep, and do what you can to reduce stress. In my opinion great, healthy food is an art, and it can make you feel wonderful. It’s also important to practice and promote spiritual and physical well-being.
What would you tell your younger self?
Always wear pharmaceutical-grade base foundation and good sunscreen.
